The Rolex Submariner is a luxury dive watch that made its debut in 1953. It was originally built for scuba divers and features a rotating bezel marked to 60 minutes in order to track immersion times. In the 1950s as commercial air travel was becoming more popular Pan Am airlines asked Rolex to design a watch for its pilots that would tell multiple time zones. Rolex then designed the Rolex GMT Master watch. The clever design of this watch features two hour hands, one 12-hour hand for the local time and one 24-hour hand for a reference time. The reference time is read off the 24-hour bezel, which the owner can rotate to align with the 24-hour hand to set the second time zone. In the 80s, Rolex introduced the GMT-Master II, which has a 24-hour hand that could be set independently from the 12-hour hand.
The Rolex Day-Date came to the market in 1956 and was nicknamed the Rolex Presidential as it was worn by the U.S. President and was to be the brand’s most luxurious model. The watch was made in gold or platinum and features a pair of calendar windows that indicate the day and date. Rolex has made several versions of the Day-Date over the years including one that was fitted with leather straps and Oyster bracelets.
The Rolex Oyster was the world’s first waterproof watch introduced in 1926. Following this in 1931, Rolex released the self-winding Perpetual movement. The Datejust is Rolex’s best-selling model which first appeared in 1945 in honour of the company’s 40th year anniversary. The Datejust was the world’s first chronometer wristwatch that displayed the date on a window on the dial. Not only was it the first but its date window is instant meaning that at midnight the date jumps to the next day instantly rather than a slow transition. All the Datejust watches have a Cyclops or magnifier above the date which protrudes above the crystal and magnifies the date 2.5 times. The Rolex Air-King was released in 1958, with a gold dial for pilots and aviators.
